I am instructed by this Government to bring to your notice the conduct of the Master of the British Screw Steamer "Darpedon" Official No. 63312. On that vessel's last arrival here from London, the Cook was charged by the Master for insubordination and using threatening language and was committed to Gaol for twelve weeks at Captain's order, or until the Vessel returned to Hong Kong from Shanghai.
I made this order because I had some doubts as to the man's sanity. Dr. Dodd, the Colonial Surgeon, has examined him in Gaol and does not consider him quite sane and I was therefore desirous that he should not be left a burden on ...
